Trying to fix a badly infected PC without HijackThis is sort of like going into surgery without a scalpel; it’s the only tool for the job when all other measures fail. New spyware strains and increasingly complex viruses emerge every day, and your PC’s immune system (i.e, antivirus software) isn’t always able to keep up. And if you’re performing emergency surgery on someone else’s PC, you may find that they didn’t have any AV software installed to begin with. No matter how bad the infection, HijackThis gives you the means to dig deep into Windows to root out whatever it is that’s wreaking havoc.

Since it’s a bar you type in to create a results list based on incremental search terms, you’d be forgiven for confusing LaunchBar with Spotlight. But LaunchBar is so much more than Spotlight, which has a sole trump card in its ability to search within files. Elsewhere, LaunchBar rules the roost. For example, you can train an item to launch using your preferred characters, and LaunchBar offers categories, enabling you to select a result type – JPEGs, phone numbers, ZIP archives and more – and search within that list

You wouldn’t be an average Maximum PC reader if you didn’t have 30 different windows, tabs, and applications open at once. After all, what’s the point of having a computer that’s dressed to the nines if you aren’t using up every available resource each time you sit at your desk?
