iSuppli: Acer Closes Gap with Dell, Fights for No. 2 Spot

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

As 2009 came to a close, the top five PC makers each held their position, but it’s the battle for second place that’s particularly interesting. According to iSuppli, Acer grew by 21 percent in 2009, ending the year with 38.5 million shipments, up from 31.8 million in 2008. No other top five PC maker enjoyed more growth. Meanwhile, Dell was the only top five vendor to post a decline in shipments for the year, dropping 9.9 percent from 43.3 million PCs to 38.96 million. That means Dell shipped enough to maintain a lead over Acer as the second largest PC vendor, but only by a hair (0.2 percent)

Dell Adamo XPS Laptop Vanishes from Dell.com

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Apparently, the Dell Adamo XPS is so thin that people are having considerable trouble sighting it on the company’s site. Tech site Electronista was the first to report the ultrathin laptop’s vanishing act. Although its product page on Dell’s site remains intact, it is no longer available for purchase there. All attempts to purchase the Adamo XPS are met with an error : “the e-value code you entered is either incorrect, not eligible on the Dell Home & Home Office website, or has expired.” It is difficult to conceive a reasonable explaination for its disappearance at this stage

Review: HP EliteBook 6930p

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

HP, the world’s number one laptop manufacturer, makes an enormous range of machines, including what they describe as business-rugged models. The EliteBook 6930p is one such laptop and is designed for use by small, medium and large businesses. The 14.1-inch produces a sharp enough image for reading and editing office documents. Unlike the Hi-Grade’s screen, it doesn’t feature a shiny Super-TFT coating, meaning there are no reflections in bright or rapidly changing light to worry about

Review: Hi-Grade Notino R5500

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Although not a specialist in rugged machines, Hi-Grade – a company based in the UK – has released the Notino R5500. It is a semi-rugged machine which isn’t designed for quite the same extreme conditions as the Dell E6400 XFR and Getac B300, but has a variety of features that make it considerably more durable than the average laptop currently on sale. The 15.4-inch screen boasts a 1280 x 768-pixel resolution and is very crisp and clear. The screen itself is shock-mounted to reduce the risk of damage from an impact and is also very bright, making it great for viewing in brightly lit conditions

Dell Hoping to Scoop Up Clustered Storage Vendor Exanet

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Dell is apparently hoping to reach out into the enterprise storage space and has placed a bid to acquire clustered storage vendor Exanet based out of Israel. “The transaction has not yet been approved by the Israel court, so we won’t speculate on its completion or timing,” a Dell spokesman said in response to a Computerworld inquiry. The bid included an offer to purchase Exanet’s assets, which are mostly patents, and other intellectual property. The offer must be court approved through a Chapter 7 liquidation in Israel. Exanet also has offices in New York, Europe, and Japan

Dell’s "CloudEdge" Data Server to Become Available for Smaller Enterprise

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

In a move sure to make Dell’s investors happy, the OEM said it plans to siphon off a portion of its custom servers designed by its Data Center Solutions division for large Web entities like Facebook and Ask.com, and sell them to large enterprises who perhaps don’t need thousands of servers every year. “What we’ve found is, there are a whole bunch of other customers who want access to those designs but who are not buying in those types of quantities,” said Andy Rhodes, a director with Dell’s DCS group. “So the big thing we’re solving now, and we’ll talk more publicly about over the next couple of months, is how to provide more of that capability to many, many more customers.” Some of those custom servers will eventually be turned into standardized products ready to be sold to comparatively smaller firms, as well as smaller Internet companies. According to reports, these will be included under a new brand called CloudEdge. “The markets we’re looking at are people building public clouds, but one tier below what we’ve been focusing on,” said Barton George, cloud evangelist for Dell.

Review: MSI CX600-064UK

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

MSI’s C series is targeted at those after an everyday computing solution. The CX600-064UK is a part of that series and provides decent performance, an interesting design and mixed portability. It doesn’t stand out much, but is certainly worth a look. The 16-inch screen is bright and offers crisp colour reproduction. It can’t compare with the PC Nextday for detail levels, however, as the latter offers a higher resolution in a smaller size screen
