Why Wipe Data Securely? Whether you are preparing to reuse a hard disk for another operating system, clear off your junk shelves by passing along outdated drives to a friend or relative, donate an old PC to a charity or school, discard a too-small USB drive or flash memory card, or repurpose an SSD, you don’t want to leave any information on the storage device. With stories abounding of identity theft aided by information lifted from discarded storage devices, you want devices you no longer plan to use to have no usable information when they head out the door. Why Erasing Files Is Not Enough Sure, you could erase the contents of the drive, but keep this in mind: the act of erasing a file does not remove it from a storage device.

With the new PocketCinema Z20, Aiptek hopes to unseat Pure Digital’s Flip, which is arguably the most popular pocket-sized camcorder. At more than double the Flip’s price, the PocketCinema Z20 can also double up as a pocket projector. It can record 720p video and capture stills at a maximum resolution of 8 MP , both of which can be viewed on its 2.4-inch LCD or projected “up to 65 inches, which is 160 centimeters diagonal, in only 2 meters short distance.” If the projector fails to win you over, it is possible to watch the recorded video on an HDTV.

The proposed web cuts in the recent BBC strategy review, which will involve the closure of around 200 websites, are not just an exercise in cost-cutting according to BBC’s Digital Chief, Eric Huggers. Speaking to the Guardian, Huggers argues that the BBC’s mistake was in allowing its web presence to ’sprawl’ which, he says, was, “a natural consequence of not being constrained by spectrum.” Huggers added: “We need to be more focused, and do it much better… we need to improve the quality level, and reprioritise on what we do best.” Double click-through to rivals Huggers has identified around 400 “top-level domain” websites that will be closed or merged by 2012 . “We’re not saying we’re cutting niche parts,” said Huggers. “What we’re saying is that we want to focus BBC Online on doing less a lot better

But the news this week that the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives are trying to amend the bill to include the banning of sites that persistently breach copyright has had web freedom fighters up in arms. To get a different perspective, TechRadar spoke to a number of the UK’s ISPs to see what they thought. Virgin Media explained to us that anything too heavy handed wouldn’t work, noting: “We share the commitment to addressing copyright infringement and recognise that new laws have an important role to play in this

Humax believes that it can provide the very best technology within its Project Canvas boxes, after being confirmed as one of the interested manufacturers. Project Canvas’ Richard Halton told the DTG Summit that Humax were among the manufacturers champing at the bit to bring a box to market for the IPTV project being led by the BBC and involving ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, and Talk Talk. Project Canvas’ Richard Halton has revealed a list of manufacturers that are keen to make set-top boxes for the BBC-backed IPTV collaboration – with some major names conspicuous in their absence. Although LG and Humax are numbered among the list given out by Halton, many will point to the names that are not being bandied around as an important factor. The likes of Sony have already criticised the project in the past – believing that the user experience for IPTV connected boxes should be set by the manufacturer and not the consortium – which consists of broadcasters, BT and Talk Talk.
