Review: B&W Zeppelin Mini

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The B&W Zeppelin Mini is a slimmed down version of the frankly enormous original B&W Zeppelin iPod dock . While similar in looks, the Zeppelin Mini is about one third the size of its big brother and it’s similarly lacking in audio power as a result. Its dual 18W speakers pack a small punch compared to the combined 100W in the original. However, the Zeppelin Mini does feature a swivel docking station for flipping your iPod into landscape mode if that’s how you roll. And more excitingly, if you leave the dock plugged into your PC or Mac via USB, you can sync your iPod or iPhone with iTunes simply by placing it in the dock

These days few hi-fi manufacturers want to be caught without an iPod dock or two in the catalogue. The Arcam irDock is one of a pair in Arcam’s current range, both notionally part of the ‘Solo’ range and, as such, twinned with the Solo and Solo Mini all-in-one systems. There’s absolutely no reason, however, to discount the possibility of using it on its own with any amp and speakers – and indeed TV or monitor, since it has video outputs. You can watch your favourite flick from a suitable iPod or just relay the cover art from the iPod’s tiny screen. You do get slightly more integrated functionality by connecting to a Solo with the supplied RS232 cable, but as a standalone unit, with its little dedicated remote control, it does just fine.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Onkyo has just announced the first affordable digital iPod dock, the Onkyo DS-A3. so are analogue docks now redundant? Not according to Onkyo’s representative, to whom we put that exact question. He pointed out, reasonably enough, that not everyone will have a digital input available, nor will they want to buy a separate DAC just for an iPod. Accordingly, this dock is optimised for extracting the most from an iPod’s analogue output

Review: Cambridge Audio iD50

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Apart from iPod-enabled products including the One and Sonata mini-systems, Cambridge makes two iPod docks, the utterly basic iD10 and the present candidate, the iD50. It is quite comprehensively featured, but Cambridge makes particular play of its audio abilities, which rely on ‘quasi differential noise cancelling’ circuits and audiophile-grade output buffers. Connections include audio output on phono sockets, composite video and S-video, and RS232 for multi-room installations.
