Even after many high-profile hacking and phishing attacks on social networking accounts, and constant messages urging people to be vigilant, the biggest problem with web security is still weak passwords. Speaking at South by South West Interactive, an industry panel of security engineering managers from Twitter, Facebook and Microsoft discussed the approaches they use to secure their web services. Del Harvey is Director of Trust and Safety at Twitter.

Facebook has contacted TechRadar with regards to the Daily Mail ’s recent report accusing the site of lax security measures for younger users, explaining that it is “not ruling out legal action” over the article. Earlier this week, the Daily Mail published an article titled ‘I posed as a girl of 14 on Facebook. What followed will sicken you’ which outlined how easy it was for underage members of the site to get chatting to complete strangers.

We’re not ones to miss a good time-wasting opportunity, so we’ve spent most of this morning using the new, improved Google Street View to look at the houses we used to live in and to sneer at our exes’ choice of curtains. But Google’s not the only firm on a geolocation tip. Everybody’s at it. You’ve been able to say where you’re tweeting from for some time, but Twitter has added mapping to the main Twitter website . Where Twitter goes Facebook inevitably follows, and the social network will unveil its own location features at next month’s F8 conference

Samsung, the famed Korean jack-of-all-technologies, is having another go at mastering the Android phone scene, after making a bit of a mess of it with last year’s original Galaxy. The i7500 Galaxy was a brave first attempt, but Samsung threw it away, alienating early adopters by not bothering to update the phone past its basic Android 1.5 operating system. Seriously, there are petitions all over the place. Some men are still very angry about it all

While there is currently a cool 32 million people regularly playing FarmVille on a daily basis on Facebook, the social network has made a plea to games developers to create ‘iconic games’ such as Mario, Halo or Sonic for the platform. Facebook Platform Manager, Gareth Davis, speaking at this week’s Games Developers Conference in San Francisco, reminded devs that the next killer game was out there and that Facebook was ready to help to host it and popularise it. Research suggests around three quarters of Facebook’s 400m users regularly play social games on the site. “The next killer game is still out there and this game will come from you,” Gareth Davis told a room of designers in San Francisco. “When we look at every major game platform, we see that there is an iconic defining game on that platform whether it’s Sonic or Mario or Halo.

The mood might be a little glum at the Foursquare and Gowalla offices today. Facebook is said to be readying new location sharing features for the popular social networking site. The launch is expected in late April. The user agreement on Facebook was updated in November to include language about the privacy of user location updates. The company also indicated that any location sharing features they might roll out (wink, wink) would be an opt-in service.

The ‘Interactive’ part of the annual South by South West conference in Austin, Texas kicks off this Friday. Known as SXSWi, and running through until Tuesday 16 March, the event brings together web designers, developers, content creators and more, to share ideas, network, announce new products and services, and then hang out in the evenings over barbeque and beer. The conference features around 200 panels and evening events covering subjects such as social media, interface design, real-time web and much more. The evenings see parties such as the Bigg Digg Shindigg, events hosted by Microsoft, Mozilla and Mashable, and a tonne of film showings, since the SXSW Film Conference and Festival runs at the same time
