Good news for those frustrated by the single track mind of the iPhone – it seems multi-tasking is finally on its way. According to Apple Insider, “people with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances” have managed to dig out this little nugget about the next iPhone 4.0 update. The sources state that Apple has managed to tweak things to the point where it can manage battery life and memory resources, meaning no substantial loss in performance. Not ready yet However, the firmware update is not ready as yet, as it apparently has a ‘long way to go’ before it’s ready to be shot out to all the iPhones. The debate over why Apple is unable to put features in its phones that every other manufacturer has managed with aplomb for yonks is an old one – it seems likely that Jobs is just looking to keep things back to make new iPhones seem even swishier.

New ‘photos’ of the iPhone 4G have supposedly leaked out via an internet forum. We say supposedly as we really can’t believe that these are real – not least because the phone is called an iPhone 4G, which we really don’t think will be Jobs’ moniker of choice come April. But the sheer graft gone into creating the range of images is magnificent – we’re seeing docks, different colour chassis – heck, they ’spy shot grabbers’ have even designed new internal packaging. Spec-less As you can imagine, there’s no specs to go along with this very-likely-made-up photoshoot (which is authentically set up in some dodgy warehouse – realistic). But hey, we love to see people trying – and it at least adds credence to the notion that the next iPhone will come in a range of colours

See what you can accomplish if you whine about something enough? Even the mighty Apple, which lords it above consumers with it’s ‘my way or the highway’ software approach, will capitulate and give the customer what he wants: the iPhone is getting multitasking . Not right away, mind you. And, if the sources AppleInsider uses are not as reliable as they claim, maybe not at all. But, should it come to fruition, it will be in version 4.0 of the iPhone OS, for which there is no projected release date

Opera has announced its Mini 5 web browser is now available for Google Android in beta form. The browser was recently announced for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry handsets but now Android users can download it from Market, with Opera saying it offers “a fast and cost-efficient Web experience”. The fast part is because Opera nicely compresses data from the web by up to 90 per cent before sending it to you – giving you a speedier mobile web experience. Fast and cost-efficient Opera boasts that it has over 50 million users worldwide and it also notes that its “easy-to-use interface offers a desktop-like web browsing experience on a mobile phone.” Other features Mini 5 offers include Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, password manager and bookmarks. “Android users should not have to compromise when it comes to surfing the web on their phones.” Says Dag Olav Norem, Vice President of Products, Opera Software

MSN Video Player has been a big enough success through a pilot scheme to be launched as a major new product, and Microsoft is not ruling out offering the service to television manufacturers, on Xbox and through the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 Series. A million people have already used the ad-funded and free MSN Video Player in beta to watch full-length programmes, trailers and clips, enough of an audience to convince the portal that the service has the appeal to become a key asset for Microsoft. With users staying for an average of 25 minutes – far more than major catch-up services like ITV Player and 4OD – and advertisers champing at the bit to buy up pre-roll adverts before the features, Microsoft has now sealed deals with the likes of Endemol and Shed Media to expand their offering further. Thousand hours “We are expanding our catalogue to over 1,000 hours,” explained MSN’s Rob Crossen. “We’ve signed a number of new deals…we’ve gone out there and sourced content that appeals to our audience.

With the internet fragmenting and every community becoming alienated from its peers, specialist social networks have been springing up to act as a kind of glue and arbitrarily stick all our disparate groups of friends together. Flickr has photos covered, Last.fm deals with music, SocialPicks gives stock tips, LinkedIn serves people who like wearing ties and Facebook reconnects you with people you don’t really want to know… and then they all plug into each other. The ostensible focus of free social network Foursquare is finding ’stuff to do’.

Nintendo releases the new Nintendo DSi XL in the UK this month, featuring a notably bigger screen and a wider viewing angle than 2009’s version of its popular handheld gaming console, the DSi. The Japanese gaming giant’s top brass – CEO Satoru Iwata and game design genius Shigeru Miyamoto – have made a lot of noise in Japan about how the new extra-large DS should appeal to older gamers in particular. Especially those consumers that buy up the latest brain-training games and are more likely to spend money on ebooks and other types of non-gaming software for the device. But all of that marketing strategy talk aside, the true Nintendo fan really only wants to know one thing: “Is this sufficiently better than the handheld I bought last year to enjoy Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Wario and all the other classic first party Nintendo games that gamers buy DSs for?” COMPARE: A comparison of the DSi XL with the DSi After all we, most probably like you, have spent a good wedge over the last five years on DS consoles, from that first ‘phat’ grey Nintendo DS that launched (to widespread confusion on the part of Nintendo fans at the time) at E3 way back in June 2004 through to last year’s DSi
