Well, we suppose it was inevitable. After being handed their walking papers earlier this week, former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella have rallied their lawyers for what promises to be the court equivalent of a train wreck colliding with the last two Matrix movies and the remnants of M. Night Shyamalan’s movie career.

Google has given its support to HTC in the recent lawsuit Apple has raised over alleged patents. Given that the patent claims made by Apple appear to be more about Android than specific HTC phones in most cases, we contacted Google to see if it had a response. A Google spokesperson told TechRadar: “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.” Battle royale brewing The fact that Google has spoken out at all over the issue shows that there are likely some patent allegations facing the Android operating system, as Apple never specifically mentions it in the documents filed. Google has been viewed as a threat to Apple, especially in the mobile space, since Eric Schmidt left Jobs’ board of directors last year, so competition was always expected between the two firms

What fun would the tech world be without its patent lawsuits to keep us amused? Not wanting to disappoint us, Apple has opened up another round of patent lawsuits, taking direct aim at potential competitor HTC, alleging violation of twenty Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface and underlying architecture and hardware . In a statement that sounds all too familiar, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it.

Experi-Metal Inc. (EMI), a Michigan-based metal supply company, is suing Comerica Bank alleging that the bank exposed its customers to phishing attacks, and thus is responsible for EMI’s financial losses. EMI fell victim to a phishing scam in which one of the EMI’s employees handed over the company’s banking credentials. Those credentials were then used to initiate wire transfers totaling $560,000 from EMI’s account to numerous other accounts scattered about in Russia, Estonia, Scotland, Finland, China, and the U.S.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset must have been relived by last week’s court ruling that lowered the damages awarded against her to $54,000 from a staggering $1.92 million. The 32-year-old mother of four was found guilty of illegally sharing copyrighted music through a P2P network in 2007. Relieved she might be, but a sense of triumph still evades her. Her attorneys had made it clear last week that they will not be satisfied until the fine itself is scrapped. They appear to be in no mood to abandon or ease their stand after rejecting RIAA’s offer to settle the lawsuit for $25,000 on Wednesday, the very same day as it was made.

The United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has begun an investigation of Nokia’s complaint that Apple infringed its patents. According to the ITC’s website , the investigation, covering seven different patents, is set currently as being in the discovery, or initial phase, and so is listed as ‘pending before the commission’. Nokia first filed its claim with the ITC in December, but also has a lawsuit in court , claiming that Apple had used technology originally patented by Nokia for GSM, UMTS and WLAN technology (2G, 3G and Wi-Fi connections) on mobile phones.

Minnesota resident Jammie Thomas-Rasset, 32, was thrust into the public eye in 2006, when the music industry chose her for the most unenviable role imaginable: the poster girl of the brand of digital piracy that the average Joe practices from the comforts of his home. Several record companies sued her for copyright infringement on April 19, 2006. Though the court originally ordered Thomas-Rasset to pay a fine of $220,000 after finding her guilty, the fine was raised to a vertiginous $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song, at a retrial.

After years of being preyed upon by the music industry, through the legal machinations of the RIAA, the hunted struck back with a lawsuit against the hunters alleging violations of U.S. antitrust law. The U.S. government’s practice of seizing laptops through random searches at border crossings is again coming under scrutiny , this time by a pair of civil rights groups who are on the hunt for potential plaintiffs. The groups include the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, both of which have the support of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
