Exclusive: Sony: ‘We’ll push 3D when the market is there’

Sony showcased its latest television range in London today, but told TechRadar that it is not going to start major publicity on 3D until the UK market is ready. Speaking to TechRadar, Christian Brown, Senior Category Marketing Manager Home Entertainment for Sony, explained the company’s stance on 3D noting: “Our big push for 3D will be in June. “We are doing it then because that is when the 3D content will be in the market, so we are not going to do a major push on something that isn’t currently here.” 3D content creation Sony has two ranges of TVs which will be 3D Ready – the LX and HX series , both of which will be out in the UK in June. It is only the LX which is 3D enabled, however, with the HX able to process 3D content but only with the addition of a £50 transmitter add-on.

World’s first commercially available Jetpack goes on sale

Ever since the glory days of the Fall Guy in the 1980s any self-respecting gadget geek has craved a workable jetpack. The new Martin Jetpack is priced at $86,000 (£57,675) and is the world’s first commercially available personal flying machine. This beast of a machine will allow you a full 30 minutes of flight time, so just be careful you are not too high when you are reaching that 28-minute point in your flight across from the top of London’s Centrepoint to the top of the BT Tower. The machine’s rotors are built from a carbon / Kevlar composite and powered by a 200hp two-liter V4 two-stroke petrol engine. Sky’s 3D showcase coming to UK shopping centres

Sky is opening its first 3D TV experience at the Westfield shopping centre in West London on Friday – the first of many planned displays to showcase the company’s forthcoming technology. With Sky’s 3D channel scheduled to launch in April for pubs , and come to homes by the end of 2010, Sky is keen to show off what consumers should expect from 3D TV. Following a successful first 3D football match – Arsenal v Manchester United last month – Sky will hope that footage including Burberry’s London Fashion Week Show, football, rugby, ballet and tennis will convince people to consider purchasing a 3D Ready television and subscribe to the satellite broadcaster. “Over the next 12 months Sky expects to have over 100 3D shopping centre demos,” explains Sky.

While 99 per cent of London’s black cab drivers are pretty trustworthy – there is always the 1 per cent of rogues that will try to take you on a merry trip around Olde London Towne in order to double the fare for the unsuspecting tourist or drunk. No more! If you have an iPhone and use cabs on a regular basis, then the new London Taxi iPhone app is what you need. It costs 59 pence and will ensure that you never get ripped off or overcharged by a cab ever again, providing you with an estimated fare for a ride in a black cab. Developed by TFL planners The app has been developed by two former Transport for London planners and the app bases its estimates using the TFL Taxi Tariff. CabbyDavid of Twitter cab finding service @tweetalondoncab , has been quick to dismiss the app claiming: “If we were to go the routes [ the app ] suggested the fares would be double what they give.”

British Library: web heritage in danger

The British Library, along with several other institutions, has warned that the UK’s web heritage could vanish forever if it’s not granted the “right to archive” – that is, to capture and keep sites. In the last six years it’s only managed to archive 6,000 sites, which are at the UK Web Archive ( http://www.webarchive.org.uk/ukwa/ ) and available to the public. However, that figure is from an estimated total of eight million out there. All archiving currently needs the permission of the site owner

Vodafone tops O2’s mobile speed poll

An independent poll from SIRODA, commissioned by O2, has found that Vodafone offers the fastest mobile browsing in the UK. The tests were commissioned over a 60-day period in 150 locations to see which networks offered the fastest services across the country. The tests were divided into two sections – web page access speed and music download speed – with O2 coming top of the latter. Vodafone comes up trumps However, the web access speed test, the results of which are critical to networks as mobile internet browsing continues to grow at a fast pace, was topped by Vodafone.

Humax HD-FOX T2 Freeview HD box goes on UK sale

Humax has announced that its HD-FOX T2 Freeview HD box has gone on general release in the UK. The box is the first to be release for the Freeview HD market and will brings HD channels to the home. Although it debuted at Selfridges at the weekend, Humax has now given the device a full UK release. The high-definition channels available thtough Freeview HD are: BBC, ITV and soon Channel 4 and S4C Wales. Alongside this, the Humax HD-FOX T2 Freeview HD box allows access to 50 standard def channels and the red button interactive service.

Sweden tops tech use rankings

In terms of the top tech use of citizens, the UK trails behind the world leader, Sweden, according to the latest chart. Sweden has beaten the U.S. in the latest annual top tech usage ranking chart, based on the usage of telecommunications technologies such as superfast broadband networks , cellphones and computers.
