Nobody really talks a whole lot about Nokia anymore, not with sexy smartphones like the Motorola Droid and Google’s Nexus One stealing all the spotlight. Part of the problem is that Symbian, even though it dominates the market, hasn’t kept pace with other OSes. Look for that to change with Symbian 3. According to Nokia, “it is about renewal” with the upcoming OS and the new phones that will be built around it. Symbian 3 should be “functionally complete” by the end of Q1.

Google’s plan to release its own mobile phone – the Nexus One – seems to have backfired as sales estimates have been slashed. Such was the hype around the search giant’s own phone that some analysts predicted that the Nexus One would sell 3.5m units in its first year. But the lack of marketing around the phone (coupled with the fact the HTC Desire is essentially the same device with greater functionality) means that investment bank Goldman Sachs has dramatically reduced its estimates.

So AT&T finally has their first Android phone, the Motorola Backflip. Whether or not you like the unusual design and Yahoo search (really?), it runs Android and it’s on AT&T. That by itself is remarkable. Now that the phone is available, users are finding yet another surprise that separates this from all the Android phones that came before it. It turns out that the option to allow apps from non-Android Market sources has been disabled .

The news that Apple is suing HTC for patent infringement reminds us of a quote by the great Jack Handey: “Even though he was an enemy of mine, I had to admit that what he had accomplished was a brilliant piece of strategy. First, he punched me. Then, he kicked me. Then, he punched me again.” Make no mistake, Apple’s move is brilliant – and while HTC is the apparent target, the company being punched here is Google. That’s bad news for Google’s Android partners, and potentially great news for Microsoft.

In January, there were murmurs of Bing replacing Google as the default search provider on the Apple iPhone. The Gregorian calender has moved to March at its traditional pace and nothing has happened on that front. But Google Search is now on the verge of getting snubbed on its own turf: Android. If you are unaware, Android is coming to AT&T in the form of the Motorola Blackflip, which is scheduled to hit stores on March 7, 2010. But Google will be a little less excited about the launch now, for the carrier is said to have removed Google as the default search provider “throughout” the phone and opted for Yahoo instead

As usual, we were treated to a plethora of top end mobile phones in Barcelona this year, and some real beauties were unveiled, with the companies behind them reaping the rewards. But for every action in the mobile world, it appears there has to be an equal and opposite reaction, with a few surprisingly big names disappointed us too – we look at the highs and lows of Mobile World Congress 2010. The winners HTC Come on, this one was a gimme. Any company that can have as successful a year in 2009 with the Magic , Hero and HD2 and follow it up with even more hot handsets has to be one of the success stories

Motorola’s Android release-a-thon is showing no signs of slowing at the moment, with one of the latest devices packing some pretty serious multimedia tech. The Motorola Motoroi has only been released in Korea, but word is it’s making its way to other shores, with Europe hotly tipped to be one of them. The Motoroi is running Android 2.0 at the moment, meaning its pushing the boundaries of the Android tech out there at the moment.

Previously known as the Zeppelin, the Motorola Quench is a mid-range Android HSDPA and Wi-Fi handset that will be known as Cliq XT in the US. Yes, for once we get the decent name. And we liked it! The handset has a 3.1-inch 320 x 480 touchscreen and a touch pad to navigate through the menus and screens. We were impressed with how this worked, though we were less enamoured with the touch of the other buttons and, indeed, the wavy-plastic look

The HTC Hero has been around for a while, and we’re waiting for an upgrade. Well, here it is – the HTC Legend, squarely picking up where the Hero left off. HTC is trying to make out to us that the Legend is not the direct sequel to the Hero, but rather a continuation of the ‘baseline’ set by that successful handset. And indeed, the Legend certainly has some upgrades – the first thing you notice is the whole body is hewn from aluminium, giving it a very MacBook look. But we’d know that characteristic lip at the base of the phone anywhere, and if you delve below the hood as well, you’ll see that the Legend has some similar specs coupled with some nice upgrades

Motorola is about to become two-faced, but not in a bad way. Targeting the first quarter of 2011, Motorola says it will split into two independent, publicly traded companies. One will continue to focus on mobile gadgets and home devices, while the other will take aim at the enterprise mobile market and network business. “The combination of Mobile Devices and our Home business brings together two highly complementary and innovative organizations,” said Dr.
