MP3 Creators Introduce New Format: MusicDNA

The developers of the ubiquitous MP3 format wish to replace it with a new format called MusicDNA . The new format was recently demoed at the Midem industry conference in Cannes by BACH Technology. The MP3 format changed the face of the music industry by delivering what was the need of the hour during the 90’s: an audio compression technology tailored to slow internet connections and small hard drives of the day. Scientists create world’s first molecular transistor

A group of scientists from Yale University has succeeded in creating the first transistor made from a single molecule. The team showed that a benzene molecule attached to gold contacts could behave just like a silicon transistor. By altering the voltage applied to it through the contacts, the researchers were able to control the current passing through the molecule. Current fun “We were able to allow current to get through when it was low, and stopping the current when it was high,” says Mark Reed, Professor of Engineering & Applied Science at Yale.

How Similar are Android and iPhone Users?

The Android platform is growing in popularity now that a multitude of phones running Google’s open-source software are available. Recent comScore and Complete surveys aimed to determine how much Android users had in common with users of the massively successful iPhone. As it turns out, users of the two platforms behave in much the same way . As far as mobile media use, the number of people that used the browser, apps, social networking, and IM were within a few percentage points of each other. Only in the area of email use did the iPhone come out ahead, 87% of users to only 63%

Facebook Breaks Down "Memology" Trends from 2009

As each year draws to a close, we find ourselves looking back on it all. Facebook is doing much the same, but the difference is that that have a huge pile of data to comb through so they can figure out just what this last year was all about. They’re calling this “Facebook Memology” . By gauging how often a subject was mentioned in status updates, Facebook was able to rank the ideas, or memes, of 2009.

Review: Onkyo DS-A3

Onkyo has just announced the first affordable digital iPod dock, the Onkyo DS-A3. so are analogue docks now redundant? Not according to Onkyo’s representative, to whom we put that exact question. He pointed out, reasonably enough, that not everyone will have a digital input available, nor will they want to buy a separate DAC just for an iPod. Accordingly, this dock is optimised for extracting the most from an iPod’s analogue output
