Email Security Firm Warns of Fake Outlook Alerts

Outlook users beware, According to Red Condor, an email filtering company, bogus Outlook alerts are making the rounds in an attempt to spread banking Trojans, which are used by hackers to access online accounts. Red Condor said potential victims receive a personalized email message that appears to come from a tech support rep. Adding to the scam’s effectiveness, the emails appear to come from the same domain as the target. The security firm claims to have blocked over a million of these types of messages, which would indicate a botnet is at work and that the hackers are playing a numbers game.

At Least Five Countries Arming Themselves for Cyberwar

It’s the Cold War all over again, only this one’s taking place in cyberspace. According to a report by security firm McAfee, there are a growing number of governments all around the globe preparing for potential cyber conflicts with other countries, DailyTech reports. “There are at least five countries known to be arming themselves for this kind of conflict,” McAfee Europe analyst Greg Day told the BBC.

Symantec Says IE Vulnerable to New Exploit

Internet Explorer users who have yet to upgrade to IE8 should take note. According to security firm Symantec, there’s a pretty nasty Zero Day exploit that affects both IE6 and IE7 . “The exploit currently exhibits signs of poor reliability, but we expect that a fully-functional reliable exploit will be available in the near future,” Symantec explained in a blog post . “When this happens, attackers will have the abilty to insert the exploit in websites infecting potential visitors.” Symantec said the attack requires JavaScript and recommends that users disable it. The security firm also suggested potentially affected users limit web surfing to only trusted sites until Microsoft releases a fix.
