Nobody really talks a whole lot about Nokia anymore, not with sexy smartphones like the Motorola Droid and Google’s Nexus One stealing all the spotlight. Part of the problem is that Symbian, even though it dominates the market, hasn’t kept pace with other OSes. Look for that to change with Symbian 3. According to Nokia, “it is about renewal” with the upcoming OS and the new phones that will be built around it. Symbian 3 should be “functionally complete” by the end of Q1.

Time to think pink again. Gizmodo has it’s hands on some leaked marketing materials which it claims spills the beans on Microsoft’s Project Pink. It looks to be headed for a debut in the very near future, and the initial provider of choice will be Verizon.

In January, there were murmurs of Bing replacing Google as the default search provider on the Apple iPhone. The Gregorian calender has moved to March at its traditional pace and nothing has happened on that front. But Google Search is now on the verge of getting snubbed on its own turf: Android. If you are unaware, Android is coming to AT&T in the form of the Motorola Blackflip, which is scheduled to hit stores on March 7, 2010. But Google will be a little less excited about the launch now, for the carrier is said to have removed Google as the default search provider “throughout” the phone and opted for Yahoo instead

After giving the most boringly obvious clue in the world , Nokia has debuted the new C5 at CeBit. The phone is the first in the new C-Series from Nokia, which seems to be the budget smartphone range from the Finns. The C5 will run Symbian S60 3rd edition, which means it just falls into the category of smartphone. This is impressive when you consider that it only costs €135 (£120) unsubsidised, with a decent feature set behind. Granted, the screen is only a 2.2-inch display, but there’s a 3.2MP camera, GPS for the free Ovi Maps navigation tool as well as a 2GB memory card in the box

For awhile there, things were looking pretty grim for T-Mobile G1 owners (aka HTC Dream). There was a lot of talk that insufficient internal memory would halt OS updates at Android 1.6 (Donut), where the only workaround would be to take matters into your own hands and hack/root the G1. According to Taylor Wimberly of Androidandme.com, that’s no longer the case.

BBC Worldwide is looking to bring classic game-show Bruce Forsyth’s The Generation Game to smartphones. A whole generation of forty-somethings will fondly remember Brucey calling out the line-up of the final prize swag on the show’s conveyor belt: “Dinner service… Cuddly toy! Cuddly toy!” It was a show that defined Saturday night television throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The current lot of PDAs, and perhaps their smartphone and Tablet PC stand-ins, are neat technology, but could you go to war with one? (Maybe even more relevant: could you afford to drop yours?) If what you need is something that will withstand a lot more abuse, AIS Industrial Innovations has something that might interest you: the Mobile Rugged PDA (RPDA37) , with the looks and brawn that pair well with your cosplay Master Chief outfit. The Mobile Rugged PDA is MIL-STD-810F/461F compliant, has an “ingress protection rating of IP67” and meets the IEC 60529 (IP65) international protection standard. It’s build to withstand extreme conditions, repeated five-foot drops, and thermal shock. And it has cool rubberized bumpers

Everything’s fine over at Verizon, folks, and you can still expect 4G wireless service to materialize sometime later this year. Or so says Dick Lynch, the company’s executive vice president and CTO. Speaking during a press conference at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, Lynch reiterated that Verizon Wireless is on track to launch its commercial LTE (long-term evolution) service later this year. There’s good chance it will come to fruition sooner rather than later, as Lynch said his company is in the final testing phase, otherwise known as “Phase 4,” of its LTE technology.
