Review: Klipsch Icon 5.1 System

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

American speaker manufacturer Klipsch is famed for its horn speakers, due to their clarity, power, definition and, most of all, sheer size. Its legend-model, the Klipschorn, is like a triangular sideboard. But this 5.1 set of Icon speakers is more living room-friendly, and intended to marry up to modern flatscreen TVs, so adopts a kind of horns-lite approach. Available in two pretty but subtle veneer finishes, each of these medium-sized boxes features a cleverly-designed polymer assembly in its face that squirts the high frequency audio all around with a greater efficiency than any normal dome tweeter ever could. Think of them as speakers for those who want sexy, top-end performance without their room dominated by massive boxes.

Review: B and W CM Series

Monday, February 15th, 2010

It’s very smelly in the Nautilus room at the Bowers & Wilkins factory – there are no leaky aircon pipes to connect it to the outside world and it’s lined with stinky rubbery stuff. But it’s where B&W locks golden-eared engineers inside for short periods (very health and safety conscious, you see) to tweak and tune the Nautilus’ individually-assembled crossovers. Even ‘un-tuned’, as I once heard these iconic speakers, gleaming dully in their rubbery gloom, they are ruddy awesome. Of course, for people who cannot afford a 9.1 system of those £55,000-a-pair speakers, it’s nice to know that a slice of the clever Nautilus tech has filtered down B&W’s range until it can be used in less esoteric products.

Future Tense: The 15% Rule of Overclocking

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Here are some of the arguments against overclocking: “It voids the warranty. It stresses the system components beyond their specifications, sometimes to the point of premature death. It requires additional expenditures of power and cooling—and if you screw it up, you can fry your processor.” And here is the biggest case for overclocking: “It makes my computer run faster.” Both of those positions are valid.

TechRadar can bring you some of the details behind the first-ever live 3D screening of a sporting event for a live audience , with nine pubs in UK and Ireland getting the chance to watch Manchester United visit the Emirates to take on Arsenal in the Premiership. The broadcaster has selected pubs in London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin to be kitted out with 3D TVs and take advantage of the special broadcast, a precursor to hundreds of venues getting the technology in April at the formal launch of the Sky 3D channel. To make the 3D preview a reality, Sky Sports will produce two edits of its live coverage of Sunday’s game at the Emirates Stadium, one for its HD channel feed and another dedicated to 3D, explains Sky. Eight rigs, 16 cameras “Eight specially engineered 3D camera rigs will house 16 of Sky’s high-definition cameras, to provide comprehensive stereoscopic coverage from all angles,” revealed Sky “The 3D broadcast will be supported by Sky’s dedicated 3D production team and purpose built 3D outside broadcast truck, which will enable live mixing between camera positions, slow motion replays and the use of innovative 3D graphics. “There will also be a dedicated commentary team to support the 3D edit.” Sky has become increasingly experienced in filming sport in 3D in the past 18 months, and the strides that have been taken were most clear at the Master Tennis at the O2 last year, where it was clear that lessons had been learned for what can be a very different method of capturing the action
